Managing Director, Expedia Australia and New Zealand, discusses the future of the online travel market within APAC

On December 13, 2012 at 03:09 AM

Following the acquisition of online travel company, Zuji, by Australian operator, Webjet, Georg Ruebensal, Managing Director of Expedia Australia and New Zealand, has announced that Expedia will finish the year in a strong position, tracking to their plan accordingly. This is despite recent comments from Webjet citing general softness in the online travel category.

Mr. Ruebensal stated “Today’s announcement from Webjet supports Expedia’s forecast for growth in the APAC region, and Expedia very much welcomes the added competition in a market that is ripe for continued expansion. Expedia sees the increased competition in the region as a benefit for both online travel consumers and suppliers.”

Expedia plans to continue building on the success of the joint venture with Asian travel operator, AirAsia, which they established back in March 2011.

Mr. Ruebensal commented: “The partnership with AirAsia undoubtedly has been instrumental in developing our product inventory in this market, with Expedia now showcasing 13 localised websites and will continue to grow this number aggressively given the demand in this region”

“Investment in Asia is not something new to Expedia. Prior to the joint venture Expedia saw great success with its eLong business which was established back in 2005 and remains a valued part of the Expedia family.”

With regards to the local market Mr. Ruebensal commented: “The acquisition of Zuji by Webjet is not something we foresee impacting the Australian travel sector, however, the competition it will provide in the Asian market is welcomed by Expedia.”
